Happy Monday and welcome to the last few days of June. It’s great to have you here!
Here’s some of what I’ve been listening to over the past week, but I’m more interested in what you’ve had on. Got something we should all be checking out? Share it below!
I'm liking a lot of your playlist, Gilby! I'll happily respond to yours! If I share what I'VE been listening to, it'll only devolve into shameless self-promotion, 'cause I really only listen to the music I'll eventually write about, and Kevin doesn't need me to clutter his comment section with THAT piffle!
So, I'm immediately attracted to The Midnight's "Heartbeat" and Inhaler's "These Are the Days." For me, it's hard to find a new band (or artist) who can, or even WANTS to, write in the "classic pop songwriting" format. Most are so enamored of rap and/or electronic noodling that any sense of melody or songcraft seems to be gladly disposed of. I mean, there's even a modulation in "Heartbeat," plus discernable verses and choruses exist...even a bridge! There's hope for the "kids these days"! I smell a new article!
I'm liking or saving, or whatever Spotify does in that arena, and I'll get to your other 'list songs eventually... and thanks! Enjoying The Summer Set right off the bat.
I think I'll even subscribe to your "PCR" as a heartfelt thank you, Gilby, for the new tips, in hopes I might catch some more inspiration! May other 'Stack visitors/readers follow suit!
Oh wow! Thanks so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. And yeah, The Midnight is doing a kind of power pop that I really like. And that The Summer Set song is custom made for summer, right? ✌️
On my last record of the collection today! Yo La Tengo's Popular Songs. I took your suggestion to heart, too, though, with a twist. I'm hoping to write a short story inspired by each album and plan to create a section for them in Ponytail Press. I'll let you know if and when I start to post them.
So, this is mostly what I have been listening to for the last 2 weeks. 🙌

PCR is fantastic-- I think you'll really like it.
I love seeing your comments in my feed! They're never clutter. Please keep 'em coming!
I’m in a British rap mood this week. Lots of Skepta and Stormzy
I got a best of The Strawbs LP and loved it. Never had a Strawbs record before--no explanation why. Also been craving War on Drugs and Washed Out.
I've been listening to a lot of war On Drugs recently as well. The Strawbs are a new one for me! What should I start with?
Skapparoneday - Great upbeat punk , real music and a funny feature length movie about to be released.
This band keeps popping up. Taking it as a sign that I've been missing out on something good!

Wilco
Followed by Mozart

This is my favorite kind of segue!

Right on! Please keep us posted. I'm looking forward to checking them out!
“Play the Game” by Queen. I hadn’t paid much attention to it until now and it’s been getting quite a few spins, even turning into a family sing-along.
