Not bad, Kevin...never really heard them before, but certainly was aware of them; I think they even perform in concert, which is something Josie & the Pussycats never did (I guess they were never let out of their.....uh, cel).
I wonder (I'm not about to do a deep dive into The Gorillaz! I've got a rep to live down...I mean, to protect) if they process their vocals on every song to sort of accentuate the animated (OK, fine...virtual) nature of their being. But, that was fun...I enjoy a diversion, every now and then, into a different cage in the musical zoo!🐵
Watching them live (I've only seen them on TV or online), it's interesting to see how different/close the vocals are compared to the studio versions. Sometimes, they're almost exactly the same, and sometimes not even close.
Hmmm....the musical detective in me is seeing a compare/contrast peek into how the Gorillaz record and take their act on the road, vocally, anyway! Might make a compelling article. I can't do it...as you know, I'm not allowed near their zoo habitat after being caught throwing something back into their enclosure.🐵🐵🐵😲
Hey Kevin! Happy Friday. Liking the Gorillaz tunes.
I wanted to take a second and thank you for introducing me to Young Gun Silver Fox. Your 5 Questions featuring YGSF was my first introduction to them, and I've been listening ever since. The band really grows on you! I liked that pre-release song "West Side Jet" and put that into my playlist rotation immediately. Then I jumped in fully with the AM album, and I've become a big fan. My wife's on board now too.
Now I'm trying to get all my music friends turned on to them as well. Thanks for putting these guys on my musical radar!
If I may, I want to share how I came into the band, and the outsized role that played in all of this (waves hand around).
As you know, one of the tenets of this page is sharing music I love with people I hope will love it. Back in the day, we'd find new sounds from friends, or by listening to the radio. Maybe a buddy leaning over from the back seat to shove a tape in, saying "you gotta hear this!," or a band opening for one you already liked. IOW, almost entirely in person. That's been mostly replaced by sterile algorithms-which I have a love/hate relationship with.
Longtime friend of the page Brian Davis tweeted (a platform I also love/hate) about the band one day, and I just happened to see it. I think it was just a picture of an upcoming release, and a mention of how excited he was about it. That's all it took. I dove in, and have never really come back up for air.
All of that to day that even in an era of living online, it's still possible to make those connections. I 'm grateful he shared the band with me, and I'm delighted to have found them a new fan in you.
You’ve got me going on a search today, Kevin. My memory fails me at the moment, but I spent some time with an album once that featured one of their songs. I loved it--but I can’t recall the name or the album. It was various artists, but I don’t think a movie soundtrack. I hadn’t thought about the band in years until I listened to one of your playlists on our road trip this week. And now this article. I’m looking forward to diving into their tunes. Thanks!
They were on a couple of the Now That's What I Call Music! compilations, and also on a charity record called Help! Some video games too, for that matter. Maybe one of those? Now I'm curious!
Yeah...I was thinking maybe it was the Help! A Day in the Life Album because the Keane/Faultline collaboration on Yellow Brock Road also sounds familiar--but some of the others aren’t ringing any bells. Maybe a friend sent me a playlist of some things he was listening to. Or maybe a NTWICM set. I’ll have to dig a little more.
Okay, so it was definitely the Help! album. After re-listening, I also recall loving Hard Fi’s version “Help Me Please.” What I think happened is that this was back in the day of iTunes. I created some playlists based on my most loved/most played songs. I think I just took what I liked from the album and left the rest, meaning some of the songs got a lot of play during that time (2006-2007?). I could go on a whole tangent about how I lost my entire music collection over iTunes migrating to Apple Music, but I don’t want to ruin my day!
I think I never 'got' the Gorillaz. But now that you are sharing them (again, I think?) I looked a bit at what they were about. Of course I listened to this song, and that left me with two thoughts:
1) it's a fun tune, and completely different than the other song I knew of them;
2) you are right: we have to power to make our communities kinder and better.

You bet! I'm really happy you like their sound!

Found the song--Hong Kong (War Child Version). Now to remember what album--maybe it was a benefit for 9/11?

First one to find it, please let the other one know! :)

I’m glad you figured it out! I’m gonna have to give it a listen.

Thanks for reminding us with this lovely song.
No one does it like the Gorillaz
